“The Sidewalks of Life”

I had the occasion a while ago to take a little excursion on the sidewalks of Johnstown after dark. I departed from the security of my warm and cozy office and exited the front door onto the sidewalk, making sure of course that the door was locked just in case an intruder happened along…And I was on the sidewalk? Thinking this strange I began walking toward the metropolis of downtown and was stopped by a red light. No cars either way, no people, no dogs, birds, bugs, or anything, but I stood at the red cause it said to. And I began to listen to the sounds around me. In the distance I heard faint musical sounds coming from a local pub that was then across the street. As I got closer I paused to observe the activity inside and out. It was summer so there were great looking motorcycles in front, several patrons on the sidewalks, some laughing, some yelling, and even one off to the side getting sick. All this activity was mixed with the ebbs and flows of people going in and out of the pub, the loud music, rumble of the crowd, and dispersed times of laughter and silence. I could not hear well enough to understand any conversations but I truly wondered what they might be talking about from the interesting expressions on their faces. And then it occurred to me, there I was, at a distance, safe from encounter, free to speculate then return to my safe little corner of the world. Hmmmm. Was I wrong not to barge into their world and give them a good dose of Jesus? Would it have been effective for Him? Would I be remising to my call if I didn’t witness? Now! When they were in the midst of sin, especially those in my parish? With my hands in my pockets, shrugged shoulders and head hung in shame I returned to my little warm and cozy office to eat my special brand of worm.

Then I thought, or should I say a thought came to me, Jesus came to bring the good news, to release the captives, to give sight to the blind, and to set the oppressed free. And, most often He does this in and through one to one contact in relationship, and maybe over a period of time. The setting of the pub may not be the best to share one to one for several reasons; other people (peers), appearance, and alcohol. So, what did I conclude? Are these folks worthy of my time; are they worthy of hearing and receiving the good-news? Yes! Yes!! And Yes!!!! So then, how do I, realistically, on the sidewalks of life, bring the message to them? (1) Seek Out The Obvious. People I know. (2) Try to find opportunities to relate, about common topics. (3) Watch for openings to share the good news, your story. (4) Pray for Christ to draw them. Then, watch with patience as the miracle happens.  The Easter miracle over and over again…..

Have a great April!
